Storm Gymnastics Team
Silverthorne Storm Gymnasts compete in Colorado Association of Recreational Athletes (CARA) meets across Colorado from May through July. During competition season, gymnasts focus on routines and perfecting already learned skills. During the off season, or fall/winter schedule, gymnasts learn new skills and focus on strength and endurance to continue their progress.
New Members Meeting: Welcome to Storm!
Storm Philosophy
Gymnastics is a beneficial activity for children of all ages; teaching awareness, agility, strength, coordination, discipline, perseverance, self-confidence and focus. Gymnastics also helps children with academics and teaches them how to work positively in a team environment. We invite children to team who show a desire for gymnastics, a willingness to work hard and that have a decent ability at the sport. Our goals for team members are to safely enjoy the benefits of the sport, to learn and develop good gymnastics techniques and to have fun.
Recreationally Competitive
We expect team members to work hard during practice and to follow the directions of the coaches. We are only in the gym four to seven hours per week, much less than most gymnastics programs, yet we do work hard while there.
Strength Training and Conditioning
Gymnasts must be very flexible and strong. There is risk involved. The stronger and more flexible a gymnast is, the better chance of avoiding injuries. We spend a good portion of our practices focusing on strength and conditioning for safety. Strength is also very important when it comes to learning many of the skills needed for competition.
CARA League and Philosophy
The CARA Gymnastics League is for gymnasts who are not sanctioned or ranked and want to compete without committing 20–40 hours per week in the gym like those on an Olympic track. It is a competitive league and team members that stick with the program achieve relatively high skill levels and are prepared to compete on a high school team. All team members compete and there is no team score kept, allowing for a focus on individual achievement. Go to CARA Gymnastics for more information.
Competition Levels
The CARA League has many different levels of competition and age divisions, allowing for most gymnasts to be successful.
Most first year team gymnasts compete at the Compulsory 3 level (C-3), learning basic skills such as back walkovers on floor and cartwheels on the beam while also learning CARA's competition routines.
The next level is Compulsory 4’s (C-4), Silverthorne Storm Gymnasts competing at the compulsory level four work on learning skills such as front and back handsprings on floor and kips on uneven bars while learning CARA's competition routines.
Optionals are the next level up from C-4’s. Optional gymnasts create their own routines with the help of the coaches and develop skills and routines in accordance with National High School Rules. The minimum skills required to compete at the optional level are back handsprings on floor and kips on bars. Optional Levels consist of Optional 1 through Optional 5.
Practice Schedule
From September to April, we practice Tuesdays and Thursdays. C-3’s and C-4's practice from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and Optional gymnasts practice from 6:15-8:15 p.m. April through July we practice three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). During June and July, C-3's and C-4's practice from 3:30-5:45 p.m. and optional gymnasts practice from 5:30-7:45 p.m. In August we take time off.
Competitions
We expect that all team members will compete during the competition season, which runs from May through July. Our first meet is usually mid to late-May and the State meet is usually late July. We compete in four regular season meets as well as a State meet for those who qualify. Most meets are on Saturdays in the Denver area. Each year we strive to host a home meet in June. Parents and gymnasts are an integral part of hosting a home meet. Parents run the score table, head up a hospitality room and organize and run a concession stand. Gymnasts assist with timing and flashing scores. Everyone pitches in for cleanup. It is a big undertaking to host a gymnastics meet at the Silverthorne Recreation Center and we appreciate the support of the team and their families to pull this event together.
Expenses
Registration and activity fees need to be paid three times a year (August, December and March). These fees include practice times, coach’s wages, CARA fees, coaches’ trainings and more.
Gymnasts also need a competition leotard, warmup jacket, yoga pants and crushed velvet shorts. These items are not included in the activity fees. We do our best to keep the same competition leotard and team jacket from year to year so that uniforms can be worn for more than one year or may be handed down or sold to other teammates.

Levels
Most first year team gymnasts compete at the Compulsory 3level (C-3), learning basic skills such as back walkovers on floor and cartwheels on the beam while also learning CARA's competition routines.
The next level is Compulsory 4’s (C-4). Silverthorne Storm Gymnasts competing at the compulsory level four work on front and back handsprings on floor and kips on uneven bars while learning CARA's competition routines.

The minimum skills required to compete at the optional level are back handsprings on floor and kips on bars. Optional Levels consist of Optional 1 through Optional 5.
Mandates
Optional gymnasts are leveled by scores: When they hit the right combinations of scores (see CARA website), they are mandated up to a higher level. Team members start as Optional 1’s and use their scores to move up the ladder.
Meet Divisions / Age Groups
The CARA program is a Recreationally Competitive program that strives to allow gymnasts to achieve some success through gymnastics. So, when agencies host a CARA meet, they follow a standard to keep numbers of competitors in a division to under 25 participants. Ideally, there are under 20 participants in a division. So larger divisions such as the Compulsory 3 group, are often times broken down further by age. For example, if there are 40 compulsory 3 athletes competing, we would divide them into two groups for awards and this is done by age. Typically, the host would call it something like “older division” and “younger division”. We do not label it by specific age because two kids can be the same age (a day apart potentially) and be split into two different divisions.
There is no minimum number in a level. For example, if there are only two Optional 4 athletes, there will only be two in that division. This can be rewarding for those who achieve the higher levels. Level sizes do tend to get smaller as they get higher. (Compulsory 3, Compulsory 4, Optional 1, Optional 2, Optional 3, Optional 4…)
Scoring / Deductions
Compulsory 3 and 4 gymnasts are scored starting at 10, and deductions are taken for mistakes. This is for Bars, Beam and Floor. Vault starts at an 8.6 and deductions are taken from there.
A full list of compulsory deductions may be found here.
Optional level gymnasts start at 0 and work their way up from zero depending on difficulty. Each Optional Vault has a start value, and they deduct from there.
Optional Event Requirements / Skills List with Difficulty Levels

Home Gymnastics Meet: Volunteers
It takes a lot of work to run a gymnastics meet out of the Silverthorne Recreation Center. With the help of parents, coaches, gymnasts and staff, we are able to organize a well-run event where our gymnasts compete in their home gym. Meet proceeds from concessions and admissions go back to the Silverthorne gymnastics program. By hosting a meet, we are able to keep our CARA league fees lower.
Our parents have always been a huge factor in the success of this event. Thank you for all of your help!
Concessions
We need one lead organizer or two co-leads to organize the concession stand. For those not leading the concession stand, please help by donating time toward this great fundraising opportunity. Baked goods (prepared to sell) are always appreciated.
Computers
During the meet we need two volunteers to run the computer at the score table. This involves data entry and solid computer skills. Benefits are front row views and treats!
Approximate Time Commitment:
- During warmups and competition for Optional Gymnasts
- During competition for Compulsory Gymnasts
Hospitality Room
Our hospitality room is where coaches and judges meet to ensure that the event runs smoothly. We provide snacks and a healthy lunch on Saturday for judges and coaches. We need one or two parents to make lunches on Saturday. The Town will pay for the supplies.
Flashers and Timers
Gymnasts who are not competing at that time will help judges with timing and flashing scores.
Clean Up
Everyone’s favorite! And also a critical piece to a successful event. We could use extra hands to clean the concession stand area, gymnasium and seating areas after the meet on Friday and Saturday.

Heather Ferley
Heather’s obsession with gymnastics began at the young age of six. Heather competed with Windsor Gymnastics for 11 years and won floor and AA placements in the Level 9 USAG Nationals. She went on to compete in Level 10 USAG before moving on to pursue Allstar Cheerleading and Dance. Since 2012 Heather has been a Team Coach for Storm Gymnastics and has choreographed the optionals floor routines, created fun warm-up routines to music edited by herself, and helped design the competition leotards. Her coaching philosophy is to nurture gymnasts as they learn pertinent life skills in a fun, welcoming, and compassionate environment.

Waivers and Forms
As with all competitive sports, there is some degree of risk involved in gymnastics. Our strength and conditioning program is critical in heading off injuries. Additionally, our coaches have a background in gymnastics and receive ongoing training with CARA and within our gym. Coaches also receive training in CPR, First Aid, AED, Concussions Training and General Safety Training.
