  • Extended closures can result in 5+ hour delays to Denver once the freeway reopens.

Safety Information

  • Do not stop your vehicle in a lane of traffic to ask officers when the highway may reopen.
  • During a closure on 1-70, do not queue your vehicle along Highway 9 or Highway 6 to try and access 1-70 first and do not wait by any freeway ramps.
  • Do not park your vehicle on the roadway, find a nearby parking lot instead.
  • Parking along Highway 6 or 9 is a criminal offense covered under Colorado Revised Statutes; Parking Prohibited 42-4-1202, Obstructing a Roadway 18-9-107 and Obedience to a Police Officer 42-4-107.
  • In the event that the highway will be closed for an extended period of time, the Town has partnered with the Outlets at Silverthorne to provide parking for commercial trucks.
  • Keep windows cracked if your vehicle is running without moving to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • If you see an accident/road hazard/road rage incident on I-70, please call 970-824-6501 or *CSP.
  • Be aware of heavy traffic volume and slick conditions.

Emergency Shelter Information

If there is an extended closure that requires an emergency shelter to be deployed, the Red Cross and Summit County Emergency Manager will make sure stranded motorists have a safe place to stay. Updated information on the closure, and/or the location of the shelter can be found on the Summit County website.

During regular operating hours, travelers may visit the Silverthorne Recreation Center for lobby access and use of restrooms and water fountains. Silverthorne Recreation Center operating hours may be found here. 


Alternate Routes to Denver

Please check road conditions before traveling these routes. All alternate routes are primarily two-lane roads that cross high elevation mountain passes. Drivers should be prepared for adverse winter driving conditions.

  • Hwy 9 through Frisco, then Breckenridge to Fairplay. At Fairplay, turn on to Hwy 285 to Denver.
  • Hwy 9 to Kremmling. Then Hwy 40 back south to I-70.
  • Hwy 6 over Loveland Pass back onto I-70.

Chain Information

Information for Passenger Vehicles

If traction laws are in place, please view the requirements.

  • Motorists driving with inadequate equipment when a Passenger Vehicle Traction Law or Chain Law is in effect could be fined more than $130.
  • If a motorist blocks the roadway because they have inadequate equipment when a Passenger Vehicle Traction Law or Chain Law is in effect, they could be fined more than $650.

Information for Truckers

In the event that the highway will be closed for an extended period of time, the Town has partnered with the Outlets at Silverthorne to provide parking for commercial trucks. 

Chains are required to be carried Sept. 1 to May 31.

  • Commercial Vehicles operating on I-70 between mileposts: Dotsero (133) and Morrison (259) must carry sufficient chains at all times to be in compliance with the Colorado chain law.
  • Fines
    • Not Carrying Chains on I-70 $50 + $17 surcharge
    • Not chaining up when the chain law is in effect statewide $500 + $79 surcharge
    • Blocking a highway as a result of not chaining up $1,000 + $157 surcharge
