Hiring Process

Candidates may be disqualified at any point during the hiring process. The Silverthorne Police Department will not discuss reasons why a candidate is disqualified at any point during the hiring process. The hiring process generally progresses in the following order:

  1. Initial application received and screened for minimum competencies
  2. Invitation to Written Testing
  3. Invitation to Oral Board
  4. Conditional Offer of Employment
  5. Polygraph Screening
  6. Psychological Screening
  7. Drug Screening
  8. Medical Screening
  9. Complete Background Investigation

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the date of hire.
  • Have completed 60 semester credits from a regionally accredited college.
  • Certified, or actively working towards certification, by the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (POST).
  • No Felony convictions, convictions of Domestic Violence, or other de-certifying misdemeanors as outlined by Colorado POST.
  • Desire to live and work in Silverthorne.

Lateral Officers must:

  • Meet the above Applicant standards
  • Have at least three years of patrol experience at the state or local level and be in good standing with their current department.
  • Please visit the Colorado POST website for lateral requirements to be provisionally certified.

Total Compensation

The Town of Silverthorne offers competitive benefits and an excellent starting salary and a $10,000 hiring bonus. View more details on our benefits package for full-time employees.

Our officer’s typical work schedule is four days a week, 10 hours each day, from Sunday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Sunday. Because Wednesday is an overlap day, it allows our department to provide in-house training on a rotating, ongoing basis.

The Silverthorne Police Department offers a step-pay plan detailed below. Step increases are received on anniversary dates, contingent upon successful performance. Lateral officers may come in at a higher step depending on level of experience.

  • Hiring Bonus: $5,000 after successful completion of Field Training Program and $5,000 after one year of service post Field Training.
